The Marrow Choir

A serialized cyberpunk-fantasy

Creed has never missed a shift.

Nine years in the marrow galleries of the god’s lower spine. Twenty hours on, four hours off, a steel drawer to sleep in and a chit-band bolted to his wrist that turns grey the moment he stops being useful.

He has a stolen relic blade that the scanners swear does not exist, a gun he built into its spine out of scrap, four hand-pressed rounds, and one friend too scared to be any use in a fight and too loyal to ever stay out of one.

When his benefactor — the Verbous collector Nate Kon — sends him past the Pelvic Breach into a poisoned, abandoned village to fetch a trinket for a vanity shelf, Creed fully expects to die out there.

He’s wrong. What waits in Vesper Hollow is going to be much worse than dying.

The God Skeleton

Nobody alive remembers the god breathing. It died standing, somewhere in the dark above a world that died with it, and what was left of humanity crawled inside the bones and stayed. Altitude is everything here. The higher you live, the cleaner you breathe — and the less of you anyone is allowed to see.

The Skull

“The Head” · Apex sanctuary

A fortress burns inside the cranial vault where the god’s mind once lived. It is the sanctuary of the absolute one percent and the unreachable apex of all authority. Every camera, every chit-band and every ledger in the skeleton feeds upward into it.

So does the money. And down from it, in exchange, falls the Drip — the narcotic that makes twenty-hour shifts survivable, handed out free on every work line, each tab stamped with the closed eye of the Head. No lower citizen may approach the Skull. Most are taught, before they can count, not to look at it at all.

EYES DOWN. THE HEAD SEES.

The Ribcage

“The Suspension Cities” · Cable metropolises

Whole metropolises hang in the dark on carbon cables thicker than dormitory towers, strung between the god’s ribs. From the Belly they look like lanterns. They sway, very slightly, if you hold your thumb up and wait long enough to notice.

Higher Ribs · The Verbous

Sparse, white-gold, cities spaced wide apart as if wealth needs room to breathe. Private vaults, relic galleries, sealed air, and bodies that are more Catalyst channel than meat.

Mid Ribs · The Mids

Crowded and warm-lit. Basic systemic rights: real housing, clean food, a window. Foremen, clerks and technicians, most with a single Catalyst rig they spent ten years paying off.

The Belly & Void

“The Under-Sectors” · Toxic depths

Below the last rib, the air goes thick and the light goes out. The Animatids crack raw marrow out of the god’s lumbar spine on twenty-hour shifts, sleep stacked forty high in steel drawers, breathe on rationed air cards, and stay alive exactly as long as a corporate sponsor keeps their chit-band green.

Beneath the Belly lies the pelvic basin, and past the Breach, the Void: poisoned ground, abandoned villages, and whatever was left out there when the Bloom came through. Unsponsored citizens are “reassigned” there. Nobody calls it a sentence. Everybody knows it is one.

Marrow, Blue & Steel

SubstanceClassified: Common Knowledge

Catalyst

Raw marrow is grey-blue sludge cracked from the god’s vertebrae by Animatid crews. It stinks like old pennies and burnt hair, and it gets into everything. Refined somewhere far above, it becomes Catalyst: luminous blue, the lifeblood of every Suspension City and the fuel of every channeled spell.

Catalyst runs safely only through cybernetic channels. Let it touch bare blood and it boils you from the vein outward. Everyone knows that. Everyone has heard the screaming story.
